FIM Bans Track Side Restarts In WorldSBK And MotoGP – Bikes Must Be Restarted On Service Road

Although we are still awaiting the publication of the 2026 MotoGP and WorldSBK rules, the FIM has published one change which could be significant. In a letter to all FIM Clerks of the Course, national federations, promoters, IRTA and members of the CCR circuit racing commission, the FIM has announced a change to the way crashed machines are to be handled by the riders and marshals.

From 2026, if a rider crashes during any session, and the engine of their motorcycle cuts out or stops running, the bike has to be pushed behind the barrier onto the service road (if present), and restarted there.

Previously, riders were allowed to try to restart their bikes at the edge of the track. This, of course, creates a dangerous situation for both riders and marshals on a live track. That is no longer allowed.
