The Las Vegas Raiders are clearly defining the identity they aim to build, especially by drawing a recent physical comparison between Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza and former NFL MVP Matt Ryan.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both quarterbacks share nearly identical physiques: they stand 6 feet 5 inches tall, with Mendoza weighing in at an impressive 236 pounds.
They also have matching 9.5-inch hands and similar arm lengths, which align with the “non-negotiable” criteria for mental and physical toughness established by the Raiders’ scouting director.
This pursuit of excellence was evident during the NFL Combine in February. Just minutes into his first meeting with the Raiders’ staff, Mendoza was put on a FaceTime call with the team’s limited partner and legendary quarterback, Tom Brady.
After a brief conversation with his idol, Mendoza spent over 30 minutes at the whiteboard, illustrating plays for the coaching staff.
Although the staff was impressed by his presentation, Mendoza was his own toughest critic.
As he left the room, he expressed visible frustration, stating loudly enough for those nearby to hear, “I messed that up.”
A Raiders scout quickly reassured him that he had done well, but this moment reinforced the front office’s belief that their presumed No. 1 pick possesses an elite internal drive.
To support his development, Las Vegas has signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to serve as a bridge and mentor, alleviating immediate pressure on the rookie.
The connection between Mendoza and the franchise icon seems to be growing stronger.
Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team reported that Tom Brady was physically present at the Raiders’ facility during Mendoza’s official visit last month.
While the team continues to conduct thorough evaluations ahead of the draft on April 23, this face-to-face interaction with Brady indicates that the organization is fully committed to making Mendoza the face of their future.
