As the Los Angeles Rams’ 2026 NFL Draft was filled with controversy after selecting Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick, it has led to an abundance of takes across the sports world. With even the speculation on Rams head coach Sean McVay being mad at the Simpson pick, which he has shut down, there have been people saying it’s a bad pick, with this insider taking the other side of the coin.
In Dan Graziano’s column touching on the multiple takes surrounding the NFL Draft, he would judge if some are overreactions, giving that label to the feeling that Los Angeles will regret taking the talented Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback.
ESPN insider argues Rams don’t have a pressing need for 2026 roster
With reigning MVP and 38-year-old Matthew Safford on the roster, some people think other players could help the team right now, as Graziano believes the Rams “don’t have any pressing needs on their 2026 roster.”
“They used their own first-round pick to trade for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. You can make a strong case that they don’t need anything more than they might need a quarterback a year from now, if Stafford decides to retire. This is clearly a quarterback about whom Rams coach Sean McVay has conviction, and the team obviously trusts McVay when it comes to his QB evaluation,” Graziano wrote.
“Heck, if he’s what McVay thinks he is, it’s not out of the question to think Simpson could help them in 2026 if Stafford has to miss a game or two and they need their backup to win a game,” Graziano continued. “The Rams are an organization that has earned the benefit of the doubt. I’d be surprised if this pick costs them a chance at next year’s Super Bowl. I would not be surprised if Simpson turns out to be Stafford’s successor, and this looks like a very smart pick in retrospect.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen how the Simpson pick will end up being, with the expectation that he won’t see the field until Stafford retires.
