The Miami Dolphins are going through a rebuilding phase, but they still have some cornerstone players that they are hoping to rely on in their first season under new head coach Jeff Hafley. One of those players is star running back De’Von Achane, who has emerged as one of the most explosive playmakers in football over the last few seasons.
This offseason, Achane has been seeking a new contract extension to reflect the value that he provides to the Miami offense. So far, the two sides have been unable to come to a resolution, leading to some speculation that he could be traded.
On Wednesday, ahead of next week’s NFL Draft, general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan stood firm on his stance that he doesn’t plan to trade Achane, via Travis Wingfield of the Drive Time podcast.
“Sullivan reiterates that RB De’Von Achane is not available for trade,” Wingfield reported on X, formerly Twitter. “He says things are trending in the right direction regarding his extension talks.”
Achane wasn’t viewed as an every-down back when he came out of college from Texas A&M in the 2023 NFL Draft, but he has proven that he can handle a pretty solid workload during his three seasons with Miami. During that time, he has played in 44 of a possible 51 games and has been very productive in both the running and passing games.
2025 was when Achane had his big breakout, leading the NFL in yards per rush (5.7). For the season, he ran the ball 238 times for 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 67 balls for 488 yards and four scores, making him one of the best Fantasy Football running backs around and helping him keep Miami’s offense afloat.
While the Dolphins are hoping that the signing of Malik Willis solves some of the quarterback problems that hampered them in 2025, it still feels likely that they will be relying heavily on the running game in 2026. Achane is obviously the most important part of that, so it’s no surprise that the Miami front office is focused on getting a deal done with him and preventing a trade.
