With the 2026 NFL Draft rapidly approaching, the biggest question surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles has to be whether Howie Roseman can pull off a deal to trade AJ Brown for a pick this year.
Sure, the cap hit would be huge. Sure, the Eagles might want to see what Brown looks like in Sean Mannion’s offense. And sure, it takes two to tango, but considering how hard the New England Patriots have been gunning for Brown’s services, that likely won’t be a major issue.
Discussing Brown’s status heading into the draft, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter explained where things presently stand among all parties involved and how likely a trade is to happen before the draft.
“Well, Hannah, just like Field said, we haven’t heard the Eagles come out and say we’re not trading AJ Brown. We have yet to hear the New England Patriots, when AJ Brown’s name comes up, do anything other than say, ‘We keep doors open, we respect the player, can’t talk about other players, but here’s a player who’s been great around the league,’” Schefter said.
“And so both sides continue to give the story oxygen whenever they’re given the opportunity. It hasn’t gone away. It’s still sitting out there. It’ll be sitting out there for a while right now. I do not expect anything here in the next couple of weeks. But again, AJ Brown to the Patriots still remains a possibility.”
Because of Brown’s massive cap hit, the Eagles are most likely to move him after June 1 if they move him at all this calendar year. Sure, they may like the idea of having two first-round picks and then some in this year’s class, but considering how strong next year is shaping up to be, it makes sense why the Eagles would keep the option on the table even if they don’t ultimately pursue it too intensely.
