De’Aaron Fox Earns Max Extension From Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs and De’Aaron Fox have re-upped through the 2029-30 season after he came over at this year’s trade deadline.

Per Shams Charania of ESPN, Fox and the Spurs agreed to terms on a four-year, $229 million contract extension. That keeps Fox, who went south to Texas at this year’s trade deadline, in San Antonio through the 2029-30 campaign, as the deal carries no player options for the final year.

Fox, 27, was dealt to the Spurs in February after eight seasons with the Sacramento Kings. The multi-pronged deal also involved the Chicago Bulls, also involved Kevin Huerter, Tre Jones, and Zach LaVine. With the trade, he joined an exciting San Antonio core headlined by Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, the most recent winners of the Rookie of the Year title.

Alas, injuries to both Fox and Wembanyama derailed their 2025 postseason chances, extending their playoff drought to a franchise-worst six seasons. That’s the longest active tally in the NBA behind only the nine-year output created by the Charlotte Hornets.

Fox, who dealt with a pinkie injury all season before he was finally sidelined in March, did manage to impress in San Antonio: he became the first player in Spurs history to post a 20-point, 10-assist double-double in his San Antonio debut. He averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in his first 17 appearances with the Spurs, who are entering a new era upon Gregg Popovich’s retirement.

Even if they’re not ready to re-enter the Western Conference penthouse, the Spurs should be one of the more intriguing stories on the league landscape next season.

In addition to promoting acting boss Mitch Johnson in Popovich’s place, the Spurs drafted Rutgers standout Dylan Harper with the second overall pick of June’s draft while also picking up Arizona’s Carter Bryant a dozen choices later.
