Commanders’ Daron Payne heading to IR after suffering significant foot injury

The Washington Commanders are hoping to turn their season around, and it all starts in the Week 8 “Sunday Night Matchup” against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, righting the ship might be a tad difficult now after the latest injury update for Daron Payne suggests he should be going to the IR.

Reports indicate that the 29-year-old defensive tackle sustained a significant foot injury during Friday’s practice, according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. It’s said that Payne will be ruled out for an indefinite amount of time, and a trip to the IR is likely.

“Commanders standout DT Daron Payne suffered a significant foot injury today in practice that will knock him out for the foreseeable future and likely land him [on] IR, sources tell me and Mike Garafolo,” Rapoport posted on X. “Payne will undergo more evaluations tomorrow. But another tough blow for Washington.”

Payne has played all six games for the Commanders up to this point. The nine-year veteran was in the middle of another solid campaign, as he was on pace for over 40 combined tackles once again. He’ll head to the IR with 14 combined tackles (seven solo), one sack, and one forced fumble.

With Payne ruled out, the Commanders are likely to turn to Deatrich Wise Jr. to fill in at the defensive line. Wise has only appeared in two games this year, generating four combined tackles (four solo). Charles Omenihu is another option to get some playing time, while Javon Kinlaw and nose tackle Tim Settle lock down the other starting spots in Washington’s 3-4 defense.
