The Indianapolis Colts took a massive gamble last November, and with the 2026 NFL Draft just days away, everyone is talking about the cost. To land Sauce Gardner, General Manager Chris Ballard shipped off a king’s ransom: first-round picks in 2026 and 2027, plus promising young wideout Adonai Mitchell. It was the definition of a “win-now” move that left the Colts without a seat at the table for this Thursday’s opening round.
If there is any pressure on Gardner to play like two first-rounders at once, he isn’t showing it. Addressing the media this week, the star cornerback delivered a masterclass in poise. “If I gotta be the first-round pick the next two years, I’m gonna work regardless,” Gardner said. He acknowledged the weight of the trade but made it clear he has handled high expectations his entire life. For a guy who earned back-to-back First-team All-Pro honors to start his career, “pressure” is just another day at the office.

The numbers back up the swagger. Despite a nagging calf strain that limited him late in the year, Gardner remained an elite force in 2025. According to season stats, he finished the campaign with 36 total tackles and nine passes defensed across 11 games between the New York Jets and Indy.
While he didn’t record an interception last season, his impact was undeniable; he finished with a 76.9 PFF grade, ranking 10th among all qualified cornerbacks. In his first few starts for the Colts, he quickly locked down one side of the field, holding opposing quarterbacks to a dismal passer rating when targeted.
Indy fans might feel the sting of a quiet draft night, but having a 25-year-old lockdown corner under contract through 2030 tends to soothe the soul. Gardner knows exactly who he is, and if he continues to erase WR1s from the box score, nobody will remember the picks it took to get him.
