Colts news: What GM Chris Ballard said about Anthony Richardson, Kenny Moore II trade requests

The Indianapolis Colts started their offseason program on Monday, but two important players were not there, quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. and cornerback Kenny Moore II. Both players have asked to be traded out of Indianapolis. GM Chris Ballard, talked to reporters about the situation and said that the front office is working on it with open lines of communication.

Speaking from the team facility, Ballard acknowledged that Richardson and Moore were not in the building for the first day of voluntary workouts. “Both players have requested trades,” Ballard said, adding that the Colts have been in direct contact with each player’s camp and characterized the discussions as productive. According to Ballard, the two sides are “on the same page,” a notable tone-setter given how publicly contentious trade requests can become during the spring calendar.

Richardson’s request is what many expected from the former No. 4 overall pick. His early time with the Colts has been marked by flashes of elite physical ability, but also by injuries and inconsistency. Richardson looks ready for a new start somewhere else now that Indianapolis has fully committed to Daniel Jones as their quarterback of the present and future. A trade would let the Colts get back some of the draft picks they lost and give Richardson a chance to start over with a new staff and system.

Moore’s request is of more significance. The veteran slot corner has been one of the most productive and respected players in the Colts’ locker room for nearly a decade, routinely grading among the league’s top nickel defenders. His departure would leave a sizable hole in Indianapolis’ secondary but could net Indy meaningful value from a contender seeking immediate help in the slot.

Ballard stressed that there is no set date for the trade, and that the Colts will keep looking at trade markets for both players as the draft gets closer. The Richardson and Moore situations are likely to be two of the most closely watched stories in the AFC South this week, as offseason programs are now in full swing and the NFL Draft is only a few days away.
