The Los Angeles Chargers are 0-6 on the season and heading into a game against their crosstown rivals, the Rams, a game Jim Harbaugh’s team is expected to lose. Harbaugh’s team is expected to rely on its defense to remain competitive, but star safety Derwin James has struggled with a hamstring injury lately.
On October 31, one day before the game, the Los Angeles Chargers announced a James-related move that fans have feared for quite some time.
“We’ve placed S Derwin James Jr. on reserve/injured + other roster moves ahead of tomorrow’s game,” the Chargers wrote on X.
James is a five-time Pro Bowler who has 21 tackles and one pass break-up so far this season. He was taken 17th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State and has gone on to become one of the NFL’s best defensive backs, and a player Harbaugh’s team has relied on ever since. James was coached by current defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary, and previously by Jesse Minter, who is now the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.
James suffered the injury early on against the Raiders and revealed he would need to manage it all season long. His management has now turned into to what should be a long hiatus from the football field as the Chargers struggle to get on the board with a win.
Harbaugh’s Chargers have plenty of talent, but injuries have taken their toll this season. Without James, they will have a chance to work in more young players, preparing for the 2027 season.
