Playoff basketball is here in the State of Texas and we are nearing the finish line.
Frisco Heritage, after a convincing win vs Red Oak on Tuesday night, is one step closer to making it to San Antonio for the Finals. Its push through the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 5A Division I postseason has been fueled by the leadership and production of Duke pledge Bryson Howard and SMU signee Cameron Lomax, two players who have helped power the Coyotes’ run toward a state championship.

Heritage’s Resume
Following the 74-57 win over Red Oak, the Coyotes are now 31-2 heading into Thursday’s Region 2 Final vs. 29-4 West Mesquite at Forney High School. Heritage came into the week ranked No. 47 in the FAB 50 National Team Rankings, but getting past West Mesquite to advance to the state semifinals won’t be easy. Defending 5A D1 champ Beaumont Westbrook could provide a formidable challenge, even though the Coyotes are the top-ranked team in the division.
It’s not easy to win a state title in Texas, as we seen Tuesday night when the state’s top overall ranked team, FAB 50 No. 6 Katy Seven Lakes fell to bubble club Humble Atascocita, 78-66, in a 6A D1 regional semi to drop Seven Lakes from the ranks of the unbeaten at 35-1.
Heritage’s Dynamic Duo
Both Howard and Lomax bring different strengths to the floor, but together they’ve formed a combination that has helped elevate Frisco Heritage when the stakes matter most.
Howard has been a steady presence throughout the playoff stretch, using his athleticism and two-way ability to impact the game in multiple areas. Offensively, the southpaw brings a confident scoring approach, capable of attacking the rim, finishing in transition, and creating advantages when possessions break down. His ability to apply pressure on defenses forces opponents to collapse and adjust their defensive schemes.

But Howard’s value extends beyond scoring. Defensively, he competes with intensity and energy, taking on tough assignments and helping set the tone for Heritage’s effort on that end of the floor. His ability to rebound, create multiple possessions for his team, push the ball in transition, and create momentum plays has been key in several playoff moments. So far this season through 33 games, the Duke-bound Howard is averaging 22.9 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 3.4 apg and 3.2 spg.
Alongside him, Lomax has been one of the most dynamic offensive guards in the country in Frisco Heritage’s postseason run. A highly skilled scorer, Lomax has the ability to impact the game at all three levels. He can knock down perimeter shots with confidence, create separation off the dribble, and attack the basket with control and creativity. His scoring versatility makes him difficult for defenses to contain, especially in high-pressure playoff situations.
Lomax’s ability to generate offense has been particularly valuable when opposing teams make runs. Whether it’s creating his own shot at the last possession of a quarter, hitting timely perimeter jumpers, or breaking down defenders to get into the paint, he provides Heritage with a reliable scoring option when the team needs it most. His offensive creativity and shot-making ability give the Coyotes a player who can shift momentum in a matter of possessions. So far this season through 31 games (he missed two), Lomax is averaging 25.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.7 apg and 3.5 spg.
Together, Howard and Lomax form a complementary pairing that gives Frisco Heritage both explosiveness and control. Howard provides athletic energy and two-way impact, while Lomax delivers the scoring punch that can take over stretches of a game.
That balance has helped the Coyotes navigate the challenges of the UIL 5A Division I playoff bracket, one of the most competitive playoff brackets in Texas high school basketball. Heritage has lost only to St. Michael’s and to previously FAB 50 ranked Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, Va.) in overtime, so far this season with potentially three games to go.
It’s not easy to win a state title, but having two high major guards that can take over a game at any moment gives the Coyotes a good shot and it’s been a joy to watch this season.
