The Cleveland Browns already had enough drama when it came to choosing Todd Monken as their next head coach, and they’ll be navigating through more of the same when deciding who will be the starting quarterback next season. Shedeur Sanders was the starting quarterback to end last season, and Monken has a firm belief in what he can do.
“What I see in Shedeur is elite playmaking ability. It’s in him,” Monken said via Zac Jackson of The Athletic.
At the same time, Monken is keeping his options open when it comes to the starting position next season.
“I don’t why it wouldn’t be an open competition. I don’t mean that…harshly, but I don’t think there’s enough on film over the last couple years one way or the other to say, boy, we have our starter at quarterback yet — whether internally or externally,” Monken said.
This is no surprise, as the Browns have a few capable quarterbacks on the roster who could be the starter. Deshaun Watson should be healthy coming into the season after his Achilles injury, and Dillon Gabriel will also have a chance to take back the starting job.
The Browns were in a similar position last season when trying to find out who would be the starting quarterback. Joe Flacco won the job in training camp, but he was eventually traded to the Cincinnati Bengals. That’s when Gabriel took the starting spot, but was injured after a few games, and Sanders took over.
Sanders showed throughout the end of the season that he could be a reliable option, but he’ll have some competition going into the training camp, which is a good problem to have for the Browns.
With three reliable quarterbacks, it will also be interesting to see if the Browns move one of them for other assets.
