Per Terrika Foster-Brasby of CBS Sports, Griner is set to sign a “seven-figure deal” to move on to the Connecticut Sun. The Sun is scheduled to play one final season in Uncasville, CT, before moving to Griner’s hometown of Houston to resurrect the defunct Comets brand.
BREAKING: Sources confirm the Sun are finalizing a 7- figure deal to bring WNBA Champion and 10x WNBA All Star Brittney Griner to Connecticut.

Griner Heads to Connecticut
Griner, 35, spent last season with the Atlanta Dream following her storied 11-year term with the Phoenix Mercury. She partook in the Dream’s franchise-best outing that saw them win 30 games and lead the league in rebounding. In a relatively reduced role, Griner averaged 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds and perhaps became expendable in Atlanta once the Dream traded for Angel Reese earlier this week.
The 10-time All-Star was born in Houston and introduced herself to the national basketball scene at local Nimitz High School. She then spent her college years at Baylor University in Waco before the Mercury came calling at the top of the 2013 WNBA Draft board.
Griner and Diana Taurasi would help Phoenix form one of the most dominant on-floor duos of the 2010s, which yielded a 2014 title and two scoring titles for the toast of Texas. Phoenix would also host Griner’s 2023 return from imprisonment in Russia, where she was arrested on drug smuggling charges when hash oil vaporizer cartridges were found in her airport luggage.

Happy Houston Homecoming on the Horizon?
Once it became clear that Griner’s time in Phoenix was up, she signed with the Dream in an attempt to play somewhat closer to home. Though 12 hours away from Houston, Atlanta is one of the closest active WNBA markets to Griner’s hometown … though that’s set to change in 2027.
Griner’s fun with the Sun will close out over two decades of pro women’s basketball in Uncasville. The team was sold to the Fertitta family earlier this spring (despite a larger offer reportedly existing from a New England-based group), and the team will head west after wrapping up the coming campaign. Once stationed in Houston, the Sun will rebrand as the Comets in a resurrection of the brand that won each of the first four WNBA titles.
Provided she’s still on the roster by the time the move begins, Griner will thus be able to represent her hometown and state on the professional level for the first time. She expressed her love for the area in June 2023 when she made a visit back to the Lone Star State for a Mercury game against the Dallas Wings. It was the first time she had made a business trip to Texas since her detainment.
“I miss Texas so much. I miss being at home, just the culture,” Griner said, per Peter Rauterkus of The Dallas Morning News. “When you’re from Texas, you know it’s like the best place to be. I’m just happy to get back to that, honestly.”
Griner will join a Sun group packed with promising incumbent young talents such as Aaliyah Edwards, Leila Lacan, Aneesah Morrow, and Saniya Rivers. Connecticut opens its final season on May 8 on the road against the New York Liberty.
