The Cincinnati Bengals are swinging for the fences this season! In one of the most unexpected moves in recent memory, Cincinnati traded for former New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. While they gave up their first-round pick in the process, the move to trade for “Sexy Dexy” should be a welcome addition for fans.
Lawrence held his first press conference as a member of the Bengals recently. During that interview, the former All-Pro defensive tackle shared some insight on his nickname and his now-iconic celebration, per Caleb Noe. Lawrence said that his sack celebration started off as a joke during practice, but former Giants teammate Saquon Barkley encouraged him to use that as his celebration.
As for his “Sexy Dexy” nickname, Lawrence said that the nickname was from his middle school days, when his coach gave him that nickname. Lawrence was also told about how his new Bengals teammate, Tee Higgins, once did his celebration during the Pro Bowl, to which the former said that it must have been some kind of foreshadowing.
Notes from Dexter Lawrence on the “Sexy Dexy” dance and nickname:
– @Saquon saw him doing the dance as a rookie, and suggested he make it his sack celebration
– Got the nickname from his middle school coach
“It stuck, somehow, someway. It carried on to now.”

Lawrence has consistently been one of the best defensive tackles in the league during his career. Drafted by the Giants in 2019, Lawrence has three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro selections to his name. The star pass rusher had 30.5 sacks and 40 tackles for loss in seven seasons with New York, and he brings star power to a Bengals defense that badly needs help.
Last season was a bit of a down year for Lawrence. Though he played in all 17 games, he recorded just half a sack and four TFLs on the year. Lawrence did record his first career interception last year, but the Bengals are hoping that a change in scenery will reignite Lawrence’s performance and return him to All-Pro status.
The Lawrence trade is the cherry on top of what has been a fruitful offseason for the Bengals. They acquired two other key pieces for their defense in pass-rusher Boye Mafe and safety Bryan Cook. Both players bring championship pedigree to a team that’s hunting for their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
