Austin MotoGP Preview: Is COTA Still Marquez Country?
MotoGP leaves the chaos of an enthusiastically received but deeply flawed Brazilian GP at Goiânia for the freshly renamed Grand Prix of the United States. (The rename, by the way, is part of a larger MSEG project to create uniformity across grand prix names. They are all to be named Grand Prix of x, where x is ideally the name of the country hosting the event, which is fine until you get to Barcelona, Aragon, Misano, or Valencia.)
The series goes from one circuit where flooding and subsurface issues caused problems for MotoGP to… another circuit where flooding and subsoil issues have caused problems for MotoGP in the past. The Circuit Of The Americas, just east of Austin, Texas was built on a type of clay that has continued to shift and settle ever since it was built. After heavy floods in 2015, damage to drainage pipes caused major movement. Repair work was less than successful, nor was grinding off some of the peaks of the bumps.
