A clash of No. 1s will close things out in Indianapolis as the Arizona Wildcats face off against the Michigan Wolverines. It pits the West and Midwest region champions together in a bid for the national title game.

Arizona, champions of the Big 12, enters as winners of its last 13, the latest entry on that ledger being a 79-64 handling of Purdue in the Elite Eight. Koa Peat led all participants with 20 points. Additionally, the Wildcats kept one of the nation’s most dangerous offenses in check to the tune of shooting 38 percent from the field. Brayden Burries also sank four 3-pointers, helping Arizona build a 22-point win on the second half scoreboard after trailing at halftime.

The Wildcats are seeking their second national championship in the program’s illustrious history and have reached the semifinal round for the first time since 2001. The first Final Four run under head coach Tommy Lloyd also featured Long Island University, Utah State, and Arkansas before the win over Purdue. Arizona has won those games by an average margin of just over 20.

Final Four Preview: Arizona Wildcats vs. Michigan Wolverines

Michigan, also seeking its second national title, has likewise posted one of the more dominant seasons on the national stage, capping off its regional dominance with a 95-62 shellacking of Tennessee in Chicago. Five different Wolverines scored in double figures, paced by 27 by Yaxel Lendeborg, while Elliot Cadeau dished out 10 assists. Head coach Dusty May will be making his second Final Four appearance, having previously overseen Florida Atlantic’s surprising run to the 2023 edition.

Michigan is in the Final Four for the first time since 2018, when it defeated Loyola Chicago before falling to Villanova. The Wolverines’ run through the Midwest, which also took out Howard, Saint Louis, and Alabama, was dominant by historic standards, as they became the first team to simultaneously post double-figure margins of victory and scoring efforts of at least 90 points in each of their first four tournament triumphs.

This is the 11th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Wolverines and the first in March. Arizona has won eight of the first ten meetings to date, the last being an 80-62 Las Vegas-based decision in Lloyd’s debut tour. Christian Koloko led the way with 22 points and four blocks while future NBA first-round pick Bennedict Mathurin added 16 tallies.

Wildcat to Watch: Jaden Bradley

The newly-crowned Big 12 Player of the Year has made a larger name for himself with his clutch antics during this postseason, but he garnered most of his national attention through his defense of both the traditional and advanced varieties. He improved his defensive rating per 100 possessions by over seven full points from last year to this one and has posted a steal percentage over two in each of his three tours in Tucson.

Arizona is well-prepared to get into a shootout with Michigan, carrying the elite shooting antics of Bradley, Burries, and second-unit standout Anthony Dell’Orso. In a shootout, however, defense, no matter how fleeting, comes up big, and Bradley has the skillset necessary to make a difference.

Wolverine to Watch: Trey McKenney

One of the reasons Michigan is so relentless is the absurd amount of depth they’ve accumulated over the past year: despite keeping the same starting five for all but two games this season, eight different players average at least 18 minutes a game. A bastion of that consistency and diversity has been McKenney, one of the first men off the bench, who has ensured the Wolverines’ power remains constant on both sides of the ball.

Michigan has been without LJ Cason during the tournament due to a knee injury, but Trey McKenney has picked up the slack and then some: since Cason went down, McKenney is shooting over 50 percent from the floor, including 62.5 percent during the tournament quartet (11.8 points per game in that span). With Elliot Cadeau requiring medical attention due to an allergic reaction, McKenney’s prowess may be called upon in further demand.

They Said It

“You’ve got to be authentic to who you have been as a person and as a coach and who your team has been … we’re just going to go and we’re going to be ourselves and we’re going to prepare like we always do … People are going to speculate all they want. This team has my full focus. Nothing, I promise you, nothing is knocking me off that path. You guys might call them distractions because you’re distracted. That doesn’t mean I’m distracted or we’re distracted.”—Lloyd on Arizona’s mindset amidst potential distractions (h/t Lindsey Dean, KGUN)

“We’ve always wanted to play against that team. They’re really good … This is what everybody goes to college basketball for, to play in blockbuster-type games. They’ve got a bunch of NBA guys. We’ve got a couple NBA guys, a bunch of NBA guys, whatever you want to say, but it’s going to be a fun matchup. I hope everybody is ready to play, because I am … They’re pretty much similar to us. We both play physical. We’re both really good in the 2-point area. We struggle with 3-pointers at times. It’s going to be a battle of the boards and a battle in the paint.”—Lendeborg on the matchup with the Wildcats (h/t James Hawkins, The Detroit News)

Prediction

Betting the over seems to be the move here with so many offensive standouts in tow. The work of Bradley and Burries speaks for itself, and Koa Peat stands as the top interior complement. Michigan’s depth, however, is not to be trifled with: even if he’s not 100 percent, Cadeau is capable of setting up scoring where it wasn’t. Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. make a difference both inside and out. McKenney and Roddy Gayle handle business off the bench. All that and more spells trouble for anyone stepping in their way, and that includes the quite talented Wildcats. A well-rounded effort from the Wolverines is enough to counter that and press on to a long-awaited chance at national championship redemption.

Michigan 84, Arizona 80
