Commanders star DT Daron Payne officially out for rest of season with Jones fracture

The Washington Commanders will be without defensive tackle Daron Payne for the rest of the season after he suffered a Jones fracture during Friday’s practice.

The injury leaves the Commanders with another absence along their defensive front as they prepare to host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. Washington has already ruled out defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.

Payne initially appeared on Friday’s injury report with a foot issue. The Commanders listed him as questionable for Sunday after he participated in practice on a limited basis.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared an update on X, formerly Twitter, detailing Payne’s injury and what it means for the rest of his season.

“Source: Commanders DL Daron Payne did in fact suffer a season-ending Jones fracture during Friday’s practice.”

Washington also faces uncertainty surrounding defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton, who remains questionable with a pectoral injury. Newton tore his pectoral during the team’s preseason finale, and Sunday could mark his return to the lineup.

Coach Dan Quinn said Newton worked hard to get healthy. Washington’s Friday update identified his potential return as a way to help offset Kinlaw’s absence, even before Schefter reported that Payne would miss the rest of the season.

The Commanders could also get Charles Omenihu back after he missed their Week 6 matchup vs. the San Francisco 49ers. His availability would give Washington another option up front heading into the Week 8 matchup.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is cleared to play after dealing with hamstring and back issues. Omenihu’s role in stopping the run takes on added importance ahead of the divisional battle.

The Commanders now enter the matchup with Kinlaw unavailable, Newton’s status unresolved, and Payne facing an absence that extends through the remainder of the season.
