Commanders invite 4-time All-Big Ten selection to rookie minicamp

One way or another, it appears the Washington Commanders will have a former Big Ten standout as their starting kicker heading into the 2026-27 campaign. Following an eventful NFL Draft that saw the organization select linebacker Sonny Styles, among others, management is extending a rookie minicamp invitation to an intriguing talent. Drew Stevens will have the opportunity to show off his leg in May, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.

The Commanders will welcome in the undrafted kicker out of Iowa, and if successful, he will earn a roster spot and compete with Jake Moody for the top slot on the depth chart. Stevens earned All-Big Ten honors in each of his four seasons with the Hawkeyes, converting 76-of-95 field goal attempts and all but two of his 126 extra-point tries. The 22-year-old was 4-of-6 from 50-yards out in 2025, a statistic that surely caught Washington’s eye.

Moody was solid after landing on the Commanders last November, connecting on 10-of-11 FG attempts in six games, but his NFL track record leaves plenty to be desired. The 2021 consensus All-American and two-time Big Ten Kicker of the Year endured a severe slump with the San Francisco 49ers following a promising rookie campaign, and he was ultimately waived just one game into the 2025-26 season.

The Commanders re-signed Moody in March, so he should at least have a chance to protect his place on the squad. Drew Stevens could be a hungry challenger, however. He will try to make a memorable first impression on head coach Dan Quinn and the rest of the organization when rookie minicamp begins.
