The Kansas City Chiefs traded up from No. 9 to No. 6 to select LSU Tigers cornerback Mansoor Delane in the 2026 NFL Draft on Thursday night. The deal with the Cleveland Browns included picks No. 9, 74, and 148, while Cleveland later used the ninth pick to draft Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano. Kansas City’s move was just the fourth time since 1967 that the franchise traded up for a top-10 pick, with the last instance coming in 2017 to select Patrick Mahomes.
With his attention on adjusting to a new team and developing chemistry with teammates, Delane was asked what his first question to Mahomes would be.
“How are you great the way you’re great?” said Delane in his post-selection press conference. “I think I want to learn from just every type of person I get around, the best to do it. I just want to take a little something from them.”

Delane, 22, arrives after a four-year college career split between Virginia Tech and LSU, appearing in 44 games and finishing with 191 tackles, 27 pass breakups, eight interceptions, and four forced fumbles. In his final season at LSU, he started all 11 games, recording 45 tackles, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions while being targeted only 35 times. His performance earned first-team All-American and All-SEC honors, along with recognition as a Jim Thorpe Award finalist.
Across 358 coverage snaps this past season, Delane allowed just 13 receptions for 147 yards and six first downs, without surrendering a single touchdown. Quarterbacks completed only 37.1 percent of passes thrown his way, and he was targeted on just 9.8 percent of snaps. His influence helped the Tigers lead the SEC in interceptions (17), passes defended (67), and pass breakups (50), while allowing only 10 passing touchdowns, the program’s lowest allowed figure since 2016.
Delane steps into a reworked Chiefs secondary following the departures of Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, and Joshua Williams, joining players such as Nohl Williams, Kristian Fulton, and Kader Kohou.
