Cowboys news: Giants WR Malik Nabers is not looking forward to facing Caleb Downs

Some people think the Dallas Cowboys got a steal with safety Caleb Downs. One skiddish NFL GM hoped Downs would land in the AFC. And Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers is not looking forward to facing Downs.

Does that make Downs a Hall of Fame safety before he plays a down? And does it mean almost every team that passed on Downs before pick No. 11 was stupid?

Here’s the fear expressed by Nabers, according to a post on X by Dov Kleiman.

“Wow: Giants star WR Malik Nabers reacts to the Dallas Cowboys drafting Caleb Downs tonight. “I’d rather get him than play against him. I gotta play against this thing again. Bro, he’s good. He’s very good, he’s VERY good.”

Did the Cowboys get a true steal in S Caleb Downs?

If you listen to some experts, like Bleacher Report, they surely did.

“The Dallas Cowboys got the steal of the draft,” Brent Sobleski wrote. “It doesn’t matter that they flipped two fifth-round picks to the Miami Dolphins to move up one spot, because Caleb Downs was easily the best player in this year’s class, regardless of position.

“Dallas ensured it got exactly who it wanted and desperately needed. The Cowboys fielded the third-worst defense last season and ranked dead last in pass defense. Downs will immediately make everyone on the unit better and give Dallas the highest IQ defender among the rookie crop and an all-around playmaker who can be used in a variety of ways.”

However, the excitement is tempered by NFL.com, calling him a “good starter within two years” and not a Year 1 starter or Pro Bowl threat.

“While he’s quick to close and strike underneath, there are hints of caution that prevent him from making more plays on the football,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “Downs isn’t the biggest, fastest, or most versatile player, but he consistently puts his stamp on games.”

Time will tell who is correct.
