The New York Giants went off-script during the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Giants selected edge rusher/linebacker Arvell Reese out of Ohio State with the No. 5 overall pick. Reese is considered easily one of the most talented players in the draft and may prove to be the best value from Thursday night.
But it seemed pretty clear to Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers that wasn’t the right pick.
“Where do you play him?” Nabers said on a Watch Party podcast next to Micah Parsons.
Of course, Nabers is referring to that position being a relative log jam in New York. The Giants drafted Abdul Carter with their first-round pick last year. He is a budding superstar and not likely to go anywhere anytime soon.
They also have Brian Burns, who was second in the NFL last season with 16.5 sacks. Don’t forget Kayvon Thibodeaux is still on the roster. The Giants selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Granted, he may be moved before his rookie contract expires.
But Nabers’ point stands. Reese was regarded as arguably the most athletic player in this year’s draft. But how much will he see the field?
He does offer tons of flexibility, though. Reese can also play as an off-ball linebacker. He has the strength and size to shed second-level blockers, but also possesses excellent closing speed.
Nabers’ frustration did not end with the Reese pick.
The Giants later drafted offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa out of Miami with the 10th overall pick. One pick later, the Dallas Cowboys took cornerback Caleb Downs.
That nearly broke the Giants wide receiver.

Nabers is not happy he will have to line up against Downs twice a season.
