Jets get 3rd 1st-round pick as 49ers trade down again

The New York Jets had quite a first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

They did not have just one or two draft picks in the opening round. They made it three after trading with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Jets sent their No. 33 and No. 179 overall picks in the draft to the 49ers in exchange for San Francisco’s No. 30 pick in the first round, per league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

With that 30th pick, the Jets selected Indiana Hoosiers wide receiver and former Fernando Mendoza weapon Omar Cooper Jr.

Before that trade, the 49ers moved down from the No. 27 spot to the No. 30 via a trade with the Miami Dolphins. And with their trade with the Jets, the Niners were left without a pick in the first round, but they will be on the clock early in the second round on Thursday.

The Jets addressed their defense with their first pick in the draft at No. 2, taking Texas Tech Red Raiders football EDGE David Bailey, which came as a surprise to at least some New York fans and NFL observers. Several picks later at No. 16, New York shored up its offense by getting Oregon Ducks football tight end Kenyon Sadiq off the draft board.

As for Cooper, he joins the Jets’ wide receiver room that is currently headed by Garrett Wilson. In his final season in college, Cooper had 937 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 69 catches in 16 games for the Hoosiers, who won the College Football Playoff National Championship Game last season.
