Chiefs make trade with Browns to get up to No. 6

The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2026 NFL Draft with significant flexibility, driven by rumors of a potential blockbuster deal involving their multiple first-round picks. Earlier in the week, ESPN’s Peter Schrager proposed an ambitious mock trade where the Chiefs would swap both their first-round picks with the Dallas Cowboys.

While that specific four-pick swap did not happen, it set the stage for an aggressive night from general manager Brett Veach.

With picks at No. 9 and No. 29, the Chiefs were widely expected to use their surplus capital to move into the top tier of the draft to secure a blue-chip prospect for their championship roster.

This aggressive strategy became a reality when the Chiefs executed a trade with the Cleveland Browns during the first round.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on X that the two teams were in “deep talks” as the draft progressed, with Kansas City looking to move into the top six.

The trade was finalized shortly after, sending the No. 6 overall pick to the Chiefs in exchange for the No. 9 pick, a third-round pick (No. 74), and a fifth-round pick (No. 148).

This jump allows Kansas City to leapfrog several rivals and secure a premier talent, demonstrating the front office’s willingness to part with mid-round assets to acquire elite playmakers.

This bold move aligns with earlier reports from ESPN insiders Adam Schefter and Peter Schrager, who suggested that the Chiefs were candidates to trade as high as No. 3 with the Arizona Cardinals.

Although Schefter noted that the team was also considering a move back to accumulate more picks, the decision to trade with the Browns highlights their desire for immediate impact.

By moving into the sixth spot, the Chiefs have positioned themselves to grab one of the draft’s most coveted prospects, further solidifying their reputation as the league’s most proactive front office.
