One of the biggest questions heading into the 2026 NFL Draft is who will be the second quarterback taken off the board, and where that player will go. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is widely expected to be selected by the Las Vegas Raiders at number one after winning the Heisman Trophy this past year, but there is no clear answer on when and where the next quarterback will go.
Many have floated the idea that former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson could be the second quarterback to have his name called, and recently, Simpson weighed in on the debate over whether or not he should be a first round pick this year, as he is already in Pittsburgh on the expectation that he will be drafted on Thursday.
“I don’t think that I would be here if I didn’t feel like my name would get called tomorrow night. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. It’s just God’s plan, you know what I mean? It’s happened before. I know the precautions of it. But the fact that I get to be here with these guys, make some relationships, and meet some of the top players in the class, it’s great, so I’m blessed,” said Simpson, per Brian Batko of the Post-Gazette Sports on X, formerly Twitter.
Simpson had a hot start to the season for Alabama, at one point himself looking like a top contender for the Heisman Trophy award.
However, that began to taper off down the stretch of the year, culminating in disastrous performances against Georgia in the SEC Championship and Indiana in the Rose Bowl.
In any case, Simpson will find out if he is indeed a first-round pick when the NFL Draft gets underway on Thursday evening in Pittsburgh.
