Over the last few years, Travis Etienne became a household name for Jacksonville Jaguars fans. The LSU product had his ups and downs in Duval, but he was a pretty productive player for most of his career. Every fan became familiar with the running back.
As it turns out, though, everyone was mispronouncing Etienne’s last name. The former Jaguars running back signed with the New Orleans Saints this year, returning to his hometown in Louisiana. After signing with the team, Etienne corrected how most people pronounced his name. Most fans used to pronounce his name as “E-tee-yen”. However, the running back said that as a child, his last name was pronounced “Achane”
That revelation surprised everyone, even his former teammates. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was also teammates with Etienne in Clemson during college, and even he admitted that, even though he knew Etienne for eight years, his pronunciation was also wrong.
“I was like, wow, I’ve known him for eight years,” Lawrence said. “And I think what happened was I came in a year after him at Clemson. And I guess he told all of them his freshman year, but I wasn’t there. I was still in high school. So when I came in, I guess he just conceded that it was going to be E-T-N instead of H-N… Yeah, so I was like, I’ve known him for eight years and didn’t even know that. So anyways, yeah, I guess he didn’t mind too much.”
Trevor Lawrence revealed on Monday that he didn’t know Etienne was pronounced as “Aye-chan” after playing with Travis Etienne for 8 years.

Etienne spent four seasons with the Jaguars after being drafted by the team in 2022. He had only one season in which he failed to reach over 1,000 yards. He was a productive running back who was a key figure in Jacksonville’s playoff runs recently, including their comeback win over the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023.
With Etienne’s departure, the Jaguars will rely on FA signing Chris Rodriguez Jr and returning RB Bhayshul Tuten. Tutel saw limited snaps last season for Jacksonville.
