Packers’ GM Brian Gutekunst hints at reason for Dontayvion Wicks trade to Eagles

The Green Bay Packers have positioned themselves for the draft, including a trade to the Eagles. And Packers GM Brian Gutekunst hinted at the reason for making that deal, according to a post on X by Matt Schneidman.

“Gutekunst implies that Packers weren’t going to extend Dontayvion Wicks, citing ‘what we were probably going to do in the future’ as part of the reason for the trade. Likes him as a player and thinks he has a bright future ahead, but ultimately was odd man out in a crowded room.”

The Packers have a crowded receiver group, but don’t really have a WR1. They are led by Christian Watson and Jayden Reed. Second-year player Matthew Golden is expected to join that duo in the starting lineup. The bench includes Savion Williams, Bo Melton, and Skyy Moore.

Packers hoping to be in good position after trade

Gutekunst said the Packers were tickled to get a pick in this year’s draft and next for Wicks, according to the Packers’ YouTube page via NBC Sports. This is true even though they were in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.

“It’s always tough to move off of a player that you feel is as good as Dontayvion was for us,” Gutekunst said. “So, the ability to get two picks for a player that we weren’t sure exactly how he was going to fit into our future plans. It just made a lot of sense. And I think it was good for us. And I think it’s going to be good for Dontayvion, too. I think he’ll see his opportunities increase there as well.”

Gutekunst said the extra picks not only have the option of more players. But also the ability to trade up. That’s a key.

“Every G.M. wants as many as you can [have],” Gutekunst said. “Not only because of the players you can select, but the ability to move. You never like giving them up. But if there’s a player in front of you that you know you’re going to acquire, it makes it a little bit easier.”
