The Chicago Bears are currently counting down the days until the 2026 NFL Draft, which is slated to get underway on Thursday evening with the first round. The Bears hold the number 25 pick in the first round, and are hoping to add to their team after a surprisingly successful run to the second round of the playoffs this past year.
Recently, Dan Wiederer of The Athletic broke down what positional groups the Bears may be targeting with that selection as the draft nears.
“It’s kind of a four-position race for the 25th pick. It’s either of the defensive line positions, it’s safety and I think it’s left tackle,” he said, per 104.3 The Score on X, formerly Twitter.
He also added that if the Bears wanted to find a starting left tackle, it would have to be at that number 25 spot, and not later on.
However, three of the four positional groups that Wiederer named were on defense, which certainly makes sense, considering the Bears’ struggles in that department throughout last season. Chicago found itself unable to get off the field in their playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round at home, consistently seeing Matthew Stafford pick them apart in the secondary, which ultimately ended their season, so it makes sense that safety would be one of the positions they’re interested in selecting at number 25.
Overall, the Bears are hoping to avoid falling into the trap that the Washington Commanders did this past year, coming off a surprising playoff run only to fall off a cliff in the ensuing seasons and miss out on the postseason altogether.
In any case, the NFL Draft will officially get underway on Thursday evening from Pittsburgh.
