The New York Jets have a tough decision with their first pick. And it seems to come down to two players. And NFL insiders believe David Bailey’s visit cancellation says it all about the No. 2 selection.
The Jets have apparently landed on Arvell Reese of Ohio State, according to The Athletic.
“Last week, we broke down the decision between Reese and David Bailey, with Bailey earning the edge because there’s less projection to his game,” Jeff Howe wrote. “But the Jets canceled Bailey’s official visit, which wouldn’t make a lick of sense if they intended to select him. This development sent a strong signal to the rest of the league that the Jets have been leaning toward Reese.”
Does Jets pre-draft move signal intent?
“Why would you cancel it unless it’s the smokescreen of all smokescreens?” an executive from another team observed. “But that wouldn’t make sense because you’d want to spend as much time with him as possible before you draft him.”
Being able to move around probably tilted the scales in Reese’s favor.
“Reese has versatility on top of versatility,” Howe wrote. “He can play off the ball on run downs and on the edge in passing situations, or whatever combination the Jets choose.
One executive noted Reese’s explosiveness. And that’s something the Jets desperately need.
“If you want a guy who has more freakish ability and versatility, but you’re working with more of a projection, you go with Reese,” a scout said. “It’s how comfortable you are with the projection, and you have to have a plan with how you’re going to use him.”
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the long run. The Jets’ loss in terms of Bailey could be the Cardinals’ gain. The consensus mock draft by NFL insiders has Bailey going right after Reese, at No. 3 to the Cardinals. Of course, there’s still a chance that the Cowboys will try to trade up and get into the mix on one of these stud defenders.
