On Monday, it was reported by ESPN that the Philadelphia Eagles would likely be trading wide receiver AJ Brown to the New England Patriots after June 1st, when his salary becomes easier to move. The decision will give Drake Maye and the New England offense a much-needed true number one receiver at their disposal heading into next year and beyond.
Recently, former NFL quarterback and current ESPN insider Dan Orlovsky revealed how Maye will benefit from having Brown in the mix, if indeed the deal comes to pass.
“Drake Maye had an MVP caliber season. He really didn’t have a guy that they could just put out by himself and say go win… there are only so many guys in the league who are walking first downs. AJ Brown is one of them,” said Orlovsky, per NFL on ESPN on X, formerly Twitter. “…when AJ is playing, he’s top five in the league in just about everything.”
Brown has had numerous public spats with the Eagles over his perceived low usage over the last couple of seasons, which has made a trade come to feel more or less inevitable as time has gone on. It’s highly unlikely that he would face a similar problem in New England, where the Patriots are working to help replace the production of Stefon Diggs, having already signed Romeo Doubs to a contract earlier this offseason.
If and when Brown joins the mix, the Patriots will suddenly have one of the most talented wide receiver rooms in the league, and they could potentially add to it further depending on who they select with their picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, which is slated to get underway later this week.
