Rams rumors: Matthew Stafford contract extension making ‘significant process’

While the Los Angeles Rams’ backup QB situation is still murky, they haven’t given up on working out more years with Matthew Stafford. And there are rumors that the Stafford contract extension is making significant progress, according to a post on X by Ian Rapoport.

“Sources: The #Rams and MVP QB Matthew Stafford have made significant progress on a new extension that should put Stafford in the building for the 2026 offseason. A deal is not done for Stafford, whose contract runs through 2026, but Sean McVay said earlier this year he believes Stafford could play beyond this season.”

It has been an amazing run for Stafford. This will be his 18th season. And he’s coming off his first MVP award.

How much are the Rams willing to spend on Matthew Stafford?

The price tag could reach into the $50 million. But there will be stipulations, options out, and all kinds of shades and covers because of Stafford’s age. He is 38 years old.

The best news about this situation is that the Rams will almost surely have Stafford behind center again in 2026. Stafford is still clearly an elite NFL quarterback.

He threw for 4,707 yards with 46 touchdowns and only eight interceptions last season. That interception total tied the lowest full-season mark of his career. The other season with only eight? That came in 2024.

Also, his total of 46 touchdown passes, which led the NFL, was a career high. Amazingly, Stafford is getting better as he enters his twilight years in the league.

It’s also easy to wonder what Stafford could have been if he had played under Sean McVay his entire career. However, McVay was only 23 years old when Stafford came into the NFL.

McVay said he’s excited about the possibility of another year with Stafford, according to ESPN.

“We’ve had great dialogue,” McVay said Tuesday when asked whether Stafford would play under the final season of his contract or whether the sides would rework his deal. “We were obviously really fired up, had a sense that that was the direction it was going to go, but that’s always the first, that’s always as important as anything is having a guy like him excited and motivated to continue to play at a good clip.”
