Bears make expected Darnell Wright move after 2nd-team All-Pro nod

Since his arrival in 2023, Darnell Wright has been a pivotal piece of the Chicago Bears’ offensive line. Now, the Bears have ensured the right tackle isn’t leaving anytime soon.

Chicago has picked up Wright’s fifth-year option, via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. He is now under team control through the 2027 season.

Originally selected with the ninth-overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Wright has gone on to start 49 games over his three years with the team. He has become a staple at right guard, earning Second-team All-Pro honors for his work at the position in 2025.

During that season, Wright’s 81.4 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked 14/89 tackles. He was 29th in pass blocking (74.3) and sixth in run blocking (85.6). The Bears will go as far as quarterback Caleb Williams does. But for him to operate, he needs time in the pocket. Wright has proven he is a more than capable blocker for his quarterback.

On the flip side, Chicago saw their run game take a massive leap forward under head coach Ben Johnson. The Bears ended their season ranked third in rushing, averaging 144.5 yards per game. Whether it’s D’Andre Swift or Kyle Monangai carrying the ball, Wright will be in charge of opening up holes from them to run through.

Wright’s presence comes at a critical time for the Bears. Ozzy Trapilo, who looked poised to take over at left tackle, suffered a torn patellar tendon at the end of the 2025 season. That position will once again be one of Chicago’s biggest mysteries throughout the season.

On the right side though, there is no question. Barring a move over, Wright will look to continue dominating at the position he has made home. The only thing the Bears can ask now is what will it take to sign Wright to a long-term extension.
