NFL rumors: Adam Schefter reveals Cowboys ‘long-shot’ draft trade scenario

The Dallas Cowboys are likely increasingly getting excited—or stressed—as the NFL Draft on Thursday gets nearer. The Cowboys are looking to nab a talented prospect, particularly on defense, who can help them get over the hump.

Dallas has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years despite an expensive roster.

The Cowboys own the No. 12 pick, with mock drafts showing that they will land either Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman, Miami defensive end Rueben Bain Jr., or Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles.

But for ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys’ decision could be very different if the New York Jets take Texas Tech defensive end David Bailey at No. 2, the Arizona Cardinals get Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love at No. 3, and the Tennessee Titans select Style at No. 4.

“Then Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese—or Bailey, if the Jets take Reese at No. 2—could slide to No. 5. It would suddenly be very tempting for a team such as the Cowboys to potentially trade up for a top-tier pass rusher,” wrote Schefter.

He stressed that everything is merely conjecture and there are many moving parts. Still, stranger things have happened in the NFL Draft, and the Cowboys are aware of that.

“The draft would have to go a specific way for this scenario to play out. But two teams raised this scenario this weekend, wondering if it somehow could unfold this week. It’s exactly the type of scenario that makes the draft so compelling,” added Schefter.

If anything, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has never been afraid to pull the trigger on a trade, and doing so on Thursday is not far-fetched.

The Cowboys were one of the worst teams on defense last season, allowing 30.1 points and 377.0 yards per game.
