Field Yates breaks down how Will Anderson extension impacts Texans’ draft strategy

The Houston Texans made Will Anderson the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history on Friday after giving him a three-year, $150 million contract extension with $134 million guaranteed. Hours after the deal was concluded, ESPN’s Field Yates reveals how this move impacts Houston’s strategy for the 2026 NFL Draft.

During a segment on “NFL on ESPN,” Yates claims that because the Texans are in the situation of paying their players huge contract extensions, the importance of hitting on draft picks becomes even more prominent. Selecting the wrong prospects could be what diminishes a roster, which Yates claims is something that happened to the Detroit Lions.

“I think [signing Anderson to an extension] underscores just sort of a bigger picture point for Houston,” said Yates. “This is a problem. It’s a good problem that other teams around the NFL have recently faced…

“You’ve got a lot of good players. You’d better absolutely nail the NFL Draft,” continued Yates. “Because the difference between sustaining that success and potentially having a regression, like the Lions had this past year, is if you don’t nail the draft, the margin just becomes so much thinner for your roster depth.”

Essentially, Yates believes the Texans have no room for error when it comes to the 2026 NFL Draft. Being able to continue acquiring top-tier talent through the draft allows any franchise to be, and remain, competitive in the NFL. That is especially true when the salary cap gets tight. Those rookie contracts become ultra-important as the years go on.

The Texans own eight total picks, with four of them being within the top 69. Houston is not scheduled to be on the clock until pick No. 28 in the first round, assuming the front office sticks and picks. Either way, Houston has the ammo for the upcoming draft to acquire some solid talent for next season and beyond.
