Giants GM Joe Schoen sends loud and clear message to No. 5 pick trade suitors

Holding the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the New York Giants are in a prime position to add one of the best players in the class. Or, they can opt to trade back and add even more draft capital to their war chest.

What the Giants decide to do though won’t come until draft day. General manager Joe Schoen wants to see who is available before making any concrete trades, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

“We’ve gotten a couple calls of teams sniffing around about potentially coming up, and we’ll just have to wait and see who’s there when we pick,” Schoen said. “I don’t really foresee us moving back before next Thursday night.”

With the John Harbaugh now head coach, he’ll have a clear vision in how he wants to construct the roster. If his ideal player is available at five, he may just be inclined to pull the trigger. But if New York’s top target is off the board, adding more draft picks would in theory add more talent to the roster.

The Giants do have some key pieces in place like quarterback Jaxson Dart on offense and pass rusher Abdul Carter on defense. But this is a New York team that finished the 2025 campaign ranked 13th in offense (334.5 YPG) and 28th in defense (359.6 YPG).

Perhaps those numbers show what side of the ball the Giants will be targeting in the draft. Regardless though, when it comes to No. 5, Schoen wants to see what all of his options are before making a final decision.
