Although Ty Simpson has been a hot topic of conversation in the lead-up to the NFL Draft, partially because of Dan Orlovsky’s Fernando Mendoza-related hot take, draft expert Todd McShay is less certain about Simpson’s eventual landing spot.
Mendoza is all but guaranteed to go off the board to the Las Vegas Raiders with the first overall pick, but after that, it’s essentially anyone’s guess as to when the next quarterback will be taken. It is largely expected that Simpson will be the second QB selected, but most analysts, including McShay, think he might have to wait until Day 2 to hear his name called and that the Arizona Cardinals at No. 34 are a team to watch.
“It’s hard to find a spot for Ty Simpson because so many teams I’ve talked to that have quarterback needs are looking to 2027,” McShay said on the ‘Rich Eisen Show.’ “Arizona is sitting in a unique spot because you got Mike LaFleur coming in. I think Ty Simpson fits what he would want to do.”
McShay said, though, that even if the Cardinals drafted Simpson this year, it would not necessarily preclude them from picking another QB next year. And while the New York Jets, who pick 33rd, are in a similar position, he believes Arizona will prove more eager to get Simpson than the Jets.
“I know the Jets like him, but we don’t love him enough to go package a pick and move up and get him. And we’re certainly not going to take him at 16. But if he’s there at 33, we could take him,” McShay said. “Arizona’s, I think, a little more aggressive with the mindset of, ‘We really like him, and we’d really like to bring him in.’”
The NFL Draft will begin on April 23 in Pittsburgh.
