Insider floats Tennessee DB selection if Jets strike out at receiver

The New York Jets are among the most tight-lipped teams ahead of the NFL Draft. There’s no telling if the team will pull the stunner of drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson early. An insider floated a Tennessee idea Wednesday, though.

NYJ owns two draft picks on night one of the draft. Jets insider for SNY Connor Hughes believes the team can potentially turn to wide receiver at No. 16. But he presented this contingency proposal should New York roll with defense at that mid-first round spot.

“If the top three receivers are off the board at No. 16, the Jets could pivot off the position there, electing to target a wideout in the backend of the first or at No. 33 instead,” Hughes said on the social media website X, formerly Twitter. “Would keep an eye on cornerback Colton Hood in this scenario. He’s rising up boards and fits the Aaron Glenn DB mold perfectly.”

Hood rises as an intriguing possibility. But fans of the Jets know all about Glenn’s past life as a shutdown cornerback in the NFL. Glenn very well can tap into his CB expertise to nab Hood at No. 16.

The Volunteers star is a “press man bully” as described by draft expert Lance Zierlein of the NFL Network. Glenn loves developing CBs who get physical at the line of scrimmage.

Granted, the Jets could address defense even earlier too. Edge rushers David Bailey of Texas Tech and Arvell Reese of Ohio State are two popular choices here. Which would signal the Jets and Glenn going offense at No. 16.
