With the 2026 NFL Draft rapidly approaching, the biggest storyline to develop in the final frame of every team’s preparation process has revolved around Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., who was involved in a fatal car crash in 2024.
Widely considered a Top-3 edge rusher in this year’s class, Bain’s stock was already heading in the wrong direction thanks to his shorter arms, but now it’s anyone’s guess where the Miami product will land in Pittsburgh later this month.
Asked about Bain’s situation on Monday by reporters, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes explained that the team has already done extensive research on the Miami product, even if some pieces of his scouting report have only come to light recently.
“We’ve known that for a while, so that doesn’t really change anything from our standpoint,” Holmes said.
Holmes take has largely been corroborated by outside observers as well, with The Ringer’s Todd McShay revealing that he knew about the crash, which took the life of 22-year-old Destiny Betts, back in January. The Todd McShay Show host also noted that every general manager he’s talked to since the initial report was also aware of Bain’s actions, making the decision to release the report under two weeks before the 2026 NFL Draft an eye-opening call.
Will Bain Jr. still be on the board when the Lions are on the clock at pick No. 17? And will the Lions even take Bain Jr. if he is still on the board? Fans will find out soon enough.
