The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will look a little different next season after a few changes to their team during the offseason. Defense is where they wanted to improve, and they recently added a cornerback for depth, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
“The Buccaneers have agreed to terms with CB Chase Lucas on a one-year deal, per his agent Jamal Tooson. Lucas, who appeared in 15 games for the 49ers, became a free agent when he went untendered as a restricted FA. Now heads east to Tampa in Todd Bowles’ defense,” Garafolo wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Bowles made an emphasis at the owners’ meeting that cornerback was a priority for the team.
“Todd Bowles said at NFL owners meetings that the team needed 1-2 more cornerbacks. They lost Kindle Vildor, Jamel Dean and Christian Izien in free agency. Lucas can play Izien’s backup nickelback spot. He was a backup nickel in San Fran,” ESPN’s Jenna Laine wrote on X.
In the 15 games that Lucas appeared in for the 49ers, he played 98 defensive snaps and 204 on special teams. He should be a key addition for the Buccaneers, and he has the versatility to either give them playing time on defense or when they need somebody on special teams.
The Buccaneers could still look to add some cornerback depth in the draft, and it will be interesting to see if they make that move early. There is no doubt that the secondary needs some improvement, as they finished last season ranked 27th in passing defense and allowed 238.2 yards per game.
For now, Lucas seems to be an important piece in the mix, and there should be a lot of competition when training camp rolls around.
