For the first time in the organization’s history, the New York Giants took the field together with John Harbaugh as their head coach, working through basic workouts during the first phase of their offseason program at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford.
While the workouts are designed to give a new coach a chance to check out his new team before the NFL Draft, where some players could be replaced or even traded away, the activities also give reporters a chance to ask the new staff questions about their team’s roster-building philosophy before they go on the clock in Pittsburgh later this month.
Keyvon Thibadeau’s status has been a hot topic of conversation in New Jersey, as he’s the obvious odd man out for the Giants at edge rusher, but there’s one defensive lineman who may not give New York a chance to decide on how he fits into their future: defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who requested a trade earlier in the week.
Asked about Lawrence’s future with the Giants, Harbaugh noted that he is aware of the request and the business surrounding it but would love to keep the three-time Pro Bowler around.
“Yeah, we’ll find out. You know, I think the prospects are going to be high because the Giants, speaking for the Giants, we want Dexter here, and I believe Dexter wants to be here, you know, and that’s a good formula, but there’s business involved. It’s a business proposition,” Harbaugh noted.
“We know it’s pro football, and these things happen every year, pretty much on every team, so not surprised. Saw it coming a few weeks back, probably, and good conversations with Dexter’s agent, Joel Siegel, and understood what they were thinking, and this is where we’re at, so we’ll just try to work through it and see what we can get done.”
One of the better defensive tackles in all of football, with enough gravity to defend the run from the nose position but enough athleticism to be a viable pass rusher on all three downs, it makes sense why the Giants would want to keep Lawrence on their team, especially as they look to install Dennard Wilson’s defense. Even if things are contentious now, money has a way of mending fences in the NFL, especially if a team really wants to keep a player around.
