This fall, fans will be able to read the full story of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has announced his new book, a memoir titled The Perilous Fight.
He shared the news on Tuesday, Apr. 7, 2026. In his announcement on X, formerly Twitter, Kaepernick promised that he would tell all in his memoir.
“What would you sacrifice for what you believe in? I gave up everything. And I’d do it again,” Kaepernick wrote. “THE PERILOUS FIGHT is the full story. The becoming, the moment, and what’s still left to fight for. The world has been telling my story for ten years. It’s my turn.”

I gave up everything. And I’d do it again. THE PERILOUS FIGHT is the full story. The becoming, the moment, and what’s still left to fight for.
The world has been telling my story for ten years. It’s my turn.

Kaepernick’s book is available to pre-order. Legacy Lit and Hachette Book Group will publish the memoir. The Perilous Fight will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026.
Additionally, Kaepernick narrated an audiobook edition of his memoir. The audiobook will be available exclusively through Audible.
It has been almost a full decade since Kaepernick last played in the NFL. He spent the entirety of his six-year NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers.
In 2012, Kaepernick saw more playing time than in his rookie year. He passed for 1,814 yards and 10 touchdowns, but he rushed for 415 yards and five scores (a career-best). Kaepernick led the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
He got his first true chance to be the 49ers’ starter in 2013. Kaepernick passed for 3,197 yards, 21 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. However, it was his running ability that made him special. He rushed for 524 yards and four touchdowns.
The following year, he passed for a career-high 3,369 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also rushed for a career-high 639 yards and four scores.
After an injury-marred 2015 campaign, Kaepernick lost the starting quarterback job to Blaine Gabbert entering the 2016 season. He opted to become a free agent following the season and was never signed to another team.
But his playing career became secondary to the symbol he became. Kaepernick was one of the faces of the Black Lives Matter movement, famously taking a knee during the National Anthem.
It is widely believed by fans that the former quarterback was blackballed out of the league shortly thereafter. Kaepernick very likely will shed light on additional details that have never been released, making the book a must-read.
