Luka Dončić Drops 60, Shakes Up NBA MVP Race

Luka Dončić scored 60 points in Miami on Thursday night. The night before in Houston, he had 40. Two games, two wins, 100 points. He did it with a sore hip, three hours of sleep, and no rest.

The Lakers got into Miami sometime after 4 a.m. Thursday. Guys were still getting to their rooms well past 5. When the injury report came out around midday, Dončić was on it — questionable, right hip soreness, same thing that’s been bothering him.

Sitting out made sense. Back-to-back. Road trip. No sleep. The Lakers had won seven straight. The Heat don’t give anything away at home. Rest, recover, get ready for the next one. That was the easy call.

Dončić wasn’t interested.

Before Lakers coach J.J. Redick could even check in with him, Dončić had already made up his mind to play. His leadership immediately paid off.

Dončić finished with 60 points on 18-for-30 shooting. He hit nine threes, shot 15-of-19 on free throws, and racked up seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals in 38 minutes. Only 15 points came from free throws. The rest came from a masterful display of shot creation on three hours of sleep, in a tough building, on the second night of a back-to-back.

“It was a superhero performance,” Redick said afterward.

Degrees of Difficulty

Sixty points wasn’t just a number. It was how he got there that mattered.

The NBA’s tracking data put it into context. Dončić took 10 shots after three to six dribbles and made seven. He took another 10 shots after seven or more dribbles and hit five. He was often drawing Bam Adebayo — an elite switching big — and making shots in his face. He was creating practically everything himself, putting the ball on the floor, creating separation, and making tough shots.

Dončić did the most damage against Heat All-NBA defender Bam Adebayo. He went 7-for-9 from the field against Adebayo for 22 points, taking on one of the league’s best defenders and winning. Adebayo knows what a historic night feels like. He scored 83 against the Wizards earlier this season. He didn’t sugarcoat what he saw.

“I know what it’s like to be in that mode,” Adebayo said. “As people can see, it’s not easy to get 80.”

Luka had 60 PTS, 9 3PT, 5 STL tonight!

Dončić scored 21 in the first half. He erupted for 19 in the third as the Lakers took control, then scored 20 more in the fourth. When Dončić stepped to the free-throw line late in the fourth quarter, needing to at least split free throws to reach 60, the crowd at Kaseya Center began chanting “M-V-P.”

“He just made big shots, he made tough shots, made a lot of right reads,” Redick said. “When he gets it going like that, some of it is you just kind of let him go. The Horns Chin Clear that we ran for the off-ball three was just a big-time screen from [Deandre Ayton], a big-time pass from LeBron, and a big-time shot from Luka. I thought that was one of the bigger buckets he had. But then had the crazy stepback three in front of their bench. I mean, you just go down the list. The shotmaking was unreal tonight.”

“You hear the whole crowd chanting ‘MVP,’ that’s what I think every player wants to hear,” Dončić said. “So I got a lot of goosebumps. It was pretty special.”

He rose to the occasion and made the shot.

100 Points, Two Cities

To understand Dončić’s performance, you have to look at Wednesday, too.

Dončić had 40 points, nine rebounds, and 10 assists in Houston. The Lakers won a hard-fought game that broke the season series tie amid a battle for Western Conference playoff positioning. They boarded a plane, lost an hour to the time zone difference, and landed in Miami early in the morning.

By the end of a tight back-to-back schedule, Dončić racked up 100 points, 16 rebounds, 13 assists, and six steals in 76 minutes.

“Just wanted to come in and see how the body felt and decided to give it a go,” Dončić said. “That’s a big, gritty win for us on the road, especially under the circumstances.”

A Season of Historic Proportions

No Laker had scored 60 in a game since the late Kobe Bryant did it in his final game on April 13, 2016. That matters. Dončić isn’t stopping to take it in. He just keeps adding to the list. Ironically, both Dončić and Bryant scored their 60th point with a free throw with 14.8 seconds left on the clock.

He scored 51 against Chicago on March 12. That gave him multiple 50-point games this season, rare in Lakers history. He leads the NBA with 13 games of 40 or more points. No one else is close. By hitting nine threes in Miami, Dončić set the Lakers’ single-season record for threes at 232, passing D’Angelo Russell.

This season, Dončić is averaging 33.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 8.4 assists in 58 games. He’s shooting 47.7% from the field, 37% from three, and 77.2% at the line. He leads the NBA in scoring. Over his last eight performances, he’s only elevated his game, averaging 40.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 7.4 assists, shooting 50% from the field, 42% from three, 78% at the line, making 6.1 threes per game. The Lakers have won all eight.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Where He Stands

After Thursday’s performance, Dončić moved to second in NBA MVP odds. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still commonly considered the frontrunner, with Victor Wembanyama as another serious candidate.

As the reigning MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander has earned his spot. He’s stayed consistent in carrying Oklahoma City to the best record in the West.

Wembanyama turned 22 this season. He’s already had stretches where he looked like nobody else. San Antonio is the two seed because of him.

Still, Dončić is making a strong case for himself as time is running out. Why didn’t he receive more consideration earlier?

“It’s you guys,” he said. “I ain’t got nothing to do with it.”

Redick’s best guess was that media members may not like Dončić’s complaints to referees.

But the award isn’t for the most likable player to the media. It’s for the best. Dončić is averaging 33.4 points per game, has just set the franchise three-point record, leads the league with 13 games of 40 or more points, and has won eight straight. There’s no way to look at those numbers and leave him off the list.
