Chiefs HC Andy Reid gives intriguing Travis Kelce update amid potential retirement

With the 2025-26 season finished, there has been speculation that Travis Kelce could call it a career. However, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared some recent comments that suggest that may not be the case.

Although Kelce is considered a free agent and could easily retire, Reid sounded optimistic that the 36-year-old tight end may re-sign with the Chiefs, according to Nate Taylor of ESPN. Andy Reid claimed that he and Travis Kelce have remained in communication so far this offseason, and he feels that’s a good sign that Kelce could return for at least one more season.

“There is communication,” Reid said about Kelce. “That’s the main thing. I’ve said this before: As long as there’s communication, I’m good. That means people want to move forward. I think that’s where Travis is.”

Nothing is set in stone yet, as the only way to confirm Kelce’s return would be if he signs a new contract. If that is the case, then the 11-time Pro Bowler would be returning for his 14th season in the NFL.

Travis Kelce ended last season with 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns. It was a bit of a struggle year for Kelce and the Chiefs, as the franchise missed out on the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

With Patrick Mahomes rehabbing a torn ACL, the club’s outlook for next season is a bit bleak. His goal is to be ready to go by Week 1 of the 2026-27 season. If he can do that, then Kelce very well could return instead of possibly retiring.
