On Sunday night, the Seattle Seahawks took home their second Super Bowl in team history with a blowout win over the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium. It was a dominant performance from the Seattle defense, which completely shut down one of the league’s better offenses in New England until some stat padding late in the fourth quarter.
With the win, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald became the third-youngest head coach ever to win a Super Bowl, and after the game, the 38 year-old got 100% real on one of the key factors in his team’s dominance this season.
“The plays, really, were irrelevant. It was the style we played,” said Macdonald, per Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, the Seahawks became known for their aggressive play-calling on the defensive side of the ball throughout this season, with the team not necessarily having one ultra-dominant pass rusher but instead a wave of relentless pressure, helped out by a great mix of seasoned veterans and young talent, which was certainly felt by the Patriots on Sunday night.
Throughout this season, the Seahawks’ defensive unit became known as the “Dark Side,” which sure looked to be a fitting name for their performance in the Super Bowl.
Naturally, comparisons arose to the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defense in the early 2010s throughout this season, and although the two units played differently stylistically, their impact on opponents was certainly similar.
Moving forward, the Seahawks seem to have all of the tools necessary to stay dominant for years to come, thanks in large part to the youth of Macdonald, who has found success at the highest level at the ripe age of 38.
However, for now, all Seattle is focusing on is properly celebrating this Super Bowl win, with a parade to come later this week.
