The Washington Commanders lost to the Detroit Lions 44-22 on Sunday, falling to 3-7 on the season. As their disastrous season continues, Washington was dealt some tough news on Monday morning. Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne has been suspended for punching Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St Brown, according to a league statement.

“Washington Commanders defensive lineman Daron Payne has been suspended without pay for one game for an act of unsportsmanlike conduct during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions,” the statement reads. Payne was ejected from the game during the second quarter.
Payne is in his eighth season, all with Washington. He only has one sack on the season, but has picked up five tackles for loss already. The former first-round pick will now miss the Week 11 matchup with the Miami Dolphins. Without Payne to stuff the run, De’Von Achane could have a big day.
The Commanders have dealt with an incredible number of injuries this season. After falling short in the NFC Championship Game last year, there were high expectations for Jayden Daniels’ second season. But the Heisman Trophy winner has missed time with various injuries, including the Lions matchup with an arm injury.
The Commanders’ defense has collapsed this season, allowing the Lions to score on every possession except for the kneel down on Sunday. Combine that with Marcus Mariota running an offense without Terry McLaurin, and there are not many wins on the schedule. Miami, which would be a win in other situations, just became a much harder matchup.
The Commanders finally hit their bye in Week 12, which could bring some players back from injury. Will that matter with only three wins heading into this Dolphins game? Washington is in dire straits, and one of their best defenders punching someone did not help.
