Is MotoGP in garbage time now? The question was remarkably asked by an Italian journalist, and put to Franco Morbidelli. It was prompted by the fact that Marc Márquez has long since wrapped up the MotoGP title, Alex Márquez has secured second. Ducati have locked in the manufacturers’ crown, and the Factory Ducati Lenovo team have won the teams championship. And last time out, Fermin Aldeguer took rookie of the year, and Gresini clinched the independent teams championship. With two rounds to go, there is nothing much at stake.
Morbidelli disagreed quite vehemently. “We are fighting for third position in the championship. That’s not garbage time at all,” he told us. He currently has 227 points, and trails current third place sitter Marco Bezzecchi by 64 points, with 74 points on the table. “We’d need a miracle to get it but this is sport and everything is possible. We need more than what we’ve been doing all year. But why not?”
