The nation’s No. 1 basketball recruit, Tyran Stokes of Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), will not play high school basketball his senior campaign at the school in SoCal’s San Fernando Valley after Ballislife.com learned he has been withdrawn from the school on Wednesday.
The news was confirmed by Notre Dame Athletic Director Alec Moss. There is no confirmation of any reasoning for his withdrawal.
Stokes is one of the nation’s best basketball prospects and currently ranked the No. 1 prospect in the country by Rivals.com, ESPN.com and 247Sports.com.
He is coming off a junior season in which he led Notre Dame’s to California’s No. 2 overall ranking with a 28-8 record and runner up finish in the SoCal open regional playoffs. Notre Dame finished ranked No. 10 in the final 2024-25 FAB 50 national Team Rankings, as Stokes used his unique combination of power, explosiveness and competitiveness to average 21.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg and 3.4 apg. Stokes was named the Cal-Hi Sports State Junior Player of the Year as well as the National Junior of the Year by Ballislife.com.
Notre Dame opened as the No. 10 team in the 2025-26 Preseason FAB 50 National Team Rankings, but not having the 6-foot-6, 225-pounder in its lineup obviously changes things for a team that has goals of capturing the 2026 Mission League title, the CIF Southern Section open crown and CIF state open title. Sargeant will still field a fine team led by junior guard NoVarro Bowman Jr. (14 ppg) and San Diego St.-bound forward Zach White (12.6 ppg), but it’s safe to say Notre Dame would not have opened up No. 10 in the country if not for the presence of Stokes.

Stokes, who turned 18 on October 12, was on the Blue Knights’ football team but has not played since Notre Dame beat L.A. Loyola on October 3. He played a total of two varsity football games as a senior.
Stokes was heavily recruited by many Blue Blood college basketball programs and the Louisville, Ky., native recently narrowed his college choices to Oregon, Kentucky and Kansas. He played his first two seasons of high school basketball at Prolific Prep, a program that was then located in Napa, Calif., but has since moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and is the preseason No. 1 team in the 2025-26 FAB 50.
