Commanders’ Marcus Mariota to start as Jayden Daniels ruled out for Week 3

The Washington Commanders will be without their star quarterback for Week 3. Jayden Daniels took a few hard hits during their loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2. After being noticeably absent during their practices, fans finally got confirmation of the worst: Daniels will be out for their Week 3 tilt against the Las Vegas Raiders. Marcus Mariota will start in his place.

“The Washington Commanders ruled out quarterback Jayden Daniels for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders because of a knee sprain. Marcus Mariota will start in his place, and Josh Johnson will be Mariota’s backup,” Nicki Jhabvala reports for The Athletic.

Daniels was listed in the middle of the week with a rib injury, an injury he sustained against the Packers. Aside from the rib injury, Daniels came up limping during the game and was seen with an ice pack on his knee right after. The Commanders star was able to finish the game and even threw two touchdowns before the game ended.

Daniels was one of the breakout stars last season. Drafted second overall by the Commanders in the previous draft, Daniels broke out as one of the best quarterbacks not only in his rookie class, but in the entire league. He completed 69% of his passes for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns. The star quarterback led Washington all the way to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mariota’s last appearance for the Commanders was during the regular-season finale, when he replaced Daniels after Washington clinched a playoff spot.
