P.J. Washington Secures $90 Million Extension to Stay With Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have secured forward P. J. Washington for the long term, agreeing to a four-year, $90 million contract extension. The deal, first reported by ESPN, keeps Washington under contract through the 2029–30 season.

Washington had one year left on his previous contract covering the 2025–26 campaign. By moving quickly to finalize an extension, the Mavericks continued their offseason approach of keeping their roster intact after extending guard Kyrie Irving and center Daniel Gafford earlier this summer.

Washington will earn $14.1 million for the 2025–26 campaign, the final year of his current three-year, $46.5 million deal, before the extension begins. Under league rules, the new agreement also makes him ineligible for a trade this season.

Washington’s Rise in Dallas

Washington arrived in Dallas in February 2024 in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets and made an immediate impact. He started every game during the Mavericks’ run to the NBA Finals that spring, averaging 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds.

In his first full season with the team, Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks while shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from 3-point range. His ability to stretch defenses and defend multiple positions gave Dallas valuable versatility.

In addition to being an impactful on-ball defender, Washington provides helpful secondary rim protection, combined with his outside shooting, allowed the Mavericks to maximize lineups around Anthony Davis and Irving. With his ability to attack closeouts and also be a post threat against mismatches, his versatiltiy makes him a valuable piece in different lineup styles.

Part of the Mavericks’ Core

The extension ties Washington’s contract to the same timeline as Irving and Gafford while also fitting alongside Davis and guard Max Christie. Dallas has also added rookie Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, who is expected to play a major role right away.

Flagg’s presence may create questions about Washington’s role in the forward rotation, but his ability to shift between power forward and small-ball center ensures he will remain a key contributor. For a Mavericks team that has battled injuries in recent seasons, Washington provides valuable depth and stability.

By securing Washington, the Mavericks continue to invest in a core that blends veteran experience with young talent. With Davis and Irving at the top, Flagg as a rising star, and Washington as a proven two-way forward, Dallas is betting on a roster capable of sustaining a championship push in the Western Conference.
