Leicester wonderkid breaks Jude Bellingham’s record to become Championship’s youngest ever goalscorer aged 16 years and 37 days old

Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga made history by becoming the Championship’s youngest ever goalscorer after finding the net against Preston.

The teenager is already regarded as one of the most highly-rated young talents in English football, with clubs including Manchester City and Barcelona keeping a close eye on his progress.

In April, Monga first entered the record books when he became the second youngest player to appear in the Premier League, doing so at just 15 years and 271 days old.

Earlier this week, he continued his rapid rise by becoming Leicester’s youngest ever starter, taking to the pitch at 16 years and 34 days old.

Monga added another milestone to his burgeoning career on Saturday, scoring in Leicester’s 2-1 defeat at Preston and setting the record as the Championship’s youngest scorer at 16 years and 37 days old.

The previous record was held by Jude Bellingham, who scored for Birmingham City in 2019 at 16 years and 63 days old.

Despite the defeat at Deepdale, Foxes boss Marti Cifuentes heaped praise on the ‘talented’ winger.

‘He deserves the credit, he is a talented boy and we are trying to take care of him because he is very humble and that is very important for me because the way he works on the pitch is excellent,’ Cifuentes told BBC Radio Leicester.

‘He wants to learn, he is eager to improve and he has a lot of talent so I’m happy that he scored his first goal and I’m sure he’s going to stay humble as well and I’m not happy only about the goal but the whole performance.

‘He is showing character and personality and we’re going to try to help him to be the player we think he can be.’

Players cannot sign a professional contract before they turn 17, and Monga will not reach that age until July 2026.

Offers can, however, be made some time before that. If an Under-16 player wishes to move elsewhere, he must inform his club and the league in writing by no later than the first Saturday in June.
