Liverpool FC transfer news: Jurgen Klopp returns and picks ‘perfect signing’

Jurgen Klopp is back at Liverpool and trying to make signings – but on this occasion, it’s unlikely to be one that the Anfield club will thank him for.

Since leaving the Premier League champions in the summer of 2024, Klopp has taken on the role of head of global soccer at Red Bull.

He is in overall charge of transfer policy at a number of clubs, including RB Leipzig. It is on the Bundesliga giants’ behalf he finds himself back in talks with the Liverpool board as he tries to broker a deal for Harvey Elliott. The Englishman is being lined up as a replacement for Xavi Simons, who is bound for Chelsea.

Bild’s Christian Falk explains: “Jurgen Kloppp, the former manager of Liverpool, is expected to pursue Harvey Elliott for a move to RB Leipzig.

“Klopp is the new mastermind of Leipzig and is dealing with Xavi Simons, who wants to leave. He is in talks with Chelsea. At the moment, there’s no official offer. If he leaves Leipzig, they will go for Harvey Elliott.

“Elliot has played over 100 times for Jurgen Klopp. He’s a very interesting player for Leipzig and he would be the new player if Xavi Simons leaves them.”

Elliott open to a move

FootballTransfers has previously reported that Tottenham Hotspur have targeted Elliott as a possible replacement for the injured James Maddison, but RB Leipzig seem to be more advanced in their discussions with the 22-year-old former Fulham player. The Bundesliga giants opened transfer talks with the player last week.

Fabrizio Romano has previously outlined Elliott’s stance towards a transfer.

“He’s been exploring opportunities but he loves Liverpool. He’d love to stay, he’d love to play but with so many players joining, it’s not easy. Now RB Leipzig are prepared to make an important proposal for Harvey Elliott and to the player. He could be the perfect replacement for Xavi Simons,” the transfer insider said.

Elliott has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €39 million but Liverpool have consistently got good value for their sales this summer and so sporting director Richard Hughes will be hopeful of getting more from RB Leipzig for the England U21 star.
